If it's your first time renting a Muskoka cottage, the trip planning splits into two halves: the stuff the listing tells you (linens, kitchen, wifi), and the stuff nobody tells you until you arrive and realize you're missing it. This list is the second half.
Before you leave home
- Confirm the cottage address and lockbox / gate code in writing.
- Ask the host whether there's cell service — some parts of Lake of Bays and Georgian Bay are patchy.
- Check whether the cottage has a boat, kayaks, SUPs, or nothing at all.
- Buy or rent games in advance. Muskoka doesn't have a big-box store on every corner — driving 45 minutes to find a cornhole set is a real thing that happens.
- Grocery-order to the nearest town (Huntsville, Bracebridge, Port Carling, Gravenhurst) rather than lugging everything from the city.
The 'nobody tells you' list
- Bug spray with picaridin or DEET, not the citronella stuff — Muskoka mosquitoes are serious in June.
- A bluetooth speaker that's actually loud enough for outside.
- Warm layer for evenings on the dock — it gets 10°C cooler than you think.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and an extra tube. You will run out.
- Reusable water bottles. Cottage tap water is usually fine but often tastes different.
- A dedicated bag for lake shoes — nobody wants sandy Blundstones in the car ride home.
What to actually spend money on
The single biggest upgrade to a Muskoka weekend, especially with a group of six or more, is having games and water toys on-site. It's what turns 'we sat around and read' into 'best weekend of the summer.' You can buy them (~$400 for a decent kit that then lives in your garage) or rent a bundle we drop off at the cottage before you arrive — set up on the lawn, picked up after checkout.

Check AvailabilityWhat to skip
- Bringing an inflatable water trampoline in the car — they are enormous, and inflating one from a hand pump takes an hour.
- Overbuying groceries — most cottage kitchens are smaller than you think.
- Any board game with more than 60 minutes of setup. The vibe is wrong.
